Meditation Exercise: Using the Power of Chant to Quiet Your Mind

The use of a simple chant changes the energy flow of your body, your brain, and even can transform your environment.

The next time you are stuck in traffic or held up at the post office and experiencing stressful thoughts or negative emotions, try chanting quietly, “It’s okay… It’s okay… It’s okay.”

Or you may wish to chant quietly, “I have plenty of time.” Keep repeating at least 5 times, and then take 5 deep breaths- 5 seconds to inhale, and 5 seconds to exhale. Then, just practice breath awareness. Notice how calm your mind can get.

I also give my clients special, short prayers of surrender to connect their busy minds with their higher self. You can try it too, if you especially have a phrase that brings you closer to your higher self, your inner strength, etc.

I have clients who are diagnosed with cancer, and have to go through chemo and body scans. Using breath work and chanting the word/sound “OM” always brings inner peace, especially when you are with anxious family members and in a hospital setting, which can be stressful by itself! Miracles often happen in your environment, and with people around you when you are at peace and calm!

Chanting is a simple way to stop your negative thoughts from controlling you. Its also effective when used with a prayer bead. Just touching the beads helps to focus your mind to the texture of the beads and to your chant and removes the grip that the negative thoughts and stressed emotions have on you.

Start with 5 minutes of a short chant or prayer. And when you have time and feel relaxed, you may wish to slowly progress to 15 mins. It’s a great exercise to remind you to slow down, let go of worry, stress, and feel happy!

It’s impossible to feel angry, depressed, irritated, and worried when you are chanting!
